These sherds were among a collection of similar, tin-glazed, blue and white pottery that were donated to Bristol Museum and Art Gallery in 1923. One of the sherds includes decoration in green, yellow and red. They were recovered from the holy well in St Anne's Wood, which was cleaned in 1923 as part of the restoration work in the valley immediately prior to its opening as a public park in 1924.
Although W J Pountney found similar sherds in a well in the graveyard of the Chapel of St Anne in the Wood in 1914, these exhibits appear to be from the holy well itself, which provides significant dating evidence for it. They probably date to the early 18th century.
