Unknown publisher
There are many reasons why the publisher of a postcard isn't known - sometimes the information is contained in the stamp box which is hidden by a stamp, or pictures were printed in books or advertisements where the back (which usually carries the maker's credit) isn't included.
It's natural to suppose the most interesting thing about a postcard is its picture, but for research into local history, the information on the back really is just as important because it provides clues to the context of its publication. That's particularly true of this project, which has a primary goal of dating the pictures.
There will always be some postcards - due to the vagaries of statistical luck and social happenstance - that remain stubbornly unidentified. But the number of postcards in this list will steadily decrease as the project - which currently is very much in its early stages - approaches its phase of maturity. It's always a pleasure to reunite a postcard into the portfolio of a particular publisher or photographer, and there's even satisfaction in moving it into the ranks of anonymous publications. Most steps along the path of progress are small, but their cumulative effect is - if you'll pardon the expression - staggering.
